Section 1 Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system?
- Protection
- Support
- Movement
- Hematopoiesis- blood cell formation in bone marrow tissue
- Stores calcium
How many types of macroscopic structures of the bone?
4 types by bone (determined by shape)
What are the four types of bone?
- Long bones
- Short bones
- Flat bones
- Irregular bones
What are types of long bones?
Radius, ulna, femur, tibia, and fibula
What are types of short bones?
Carpals, tarsals
What are types of flat bones?
Frontal, parietal, scapula
What are types of irregular bones?
Mandible, vertebrae
What’s the structure of a long bone?
Diaphysis, epiphysis, articular cartilage, periosteum, medullary cavity, endosteum, spongy bone, and compact bone
What’s the diaphysis?
Shaft of the bone
What’s epiphysis?
Ends or extrememities of the bone
What’s articular cartilage?
Cartilage that’s located at the end of the long bones (comes in contact)
What’s periosteum?
Fibrous membrane covering the bone
What’s Medullary cavity?
Cavity that’s located in the diaphysis or shaft of the bone. Contains Hematopoiesis tissue
What’s endosteum?
Lining if he medullary cavity
What’s Spongy bone?
Bone with air cells leveled within it (not compact)
