Section 1 Flashcards
0
Q
Inflammation
A
Goals
- increase blood flow to the site of an injury (vascular response)
- alert the products of healing to attend to the site of injury (cellular response)
- removing injured tissue and prepare site for healing
1
Q
Body defense mechanisms
A
- skin and mucous membranes, the physical barriers
- inflammatory response
- immune response
2
Q
Injury
A
- any form of damage, harm or loss to the cell, tissue, organ, or organ system
- injuries include invasion by micro organisms (infection), cellular mutations (genetic), anoxia (lack of oxygen) and the physical or chemical damage
- anoxia, hypoxia, and Ischemia
3
Q
Vascular response
A
Two slides
4
Q
Inflammatory mediators
A
Found in mast cells
- Mast cells release
- histamine
- leukotrines
- prostaglandins
5
Q
Cytokines
A
Other WBCs release cytokines
Ex -
- interleukins - growth factors - interferons - chemokines
6
Q
Platelets
A
Two slides
7
Q
Complement system
A
- composed of several proteins which a have primary role in destroying and removing microorganisms, thereby averting infection.
- Complement
- renders bacterial vulnerable to phagocytosis
- causes chemotaxis
- causes activation of mast cells and basophils to release chemical mediators
- causes cell lysis ( breakdown of cells)
8
Q
Exudate
A
Two sides
9
Q
Serous
A
Watery (fluid in a blister)
10
Q
Fibrinous
A
Thick and clotted ( sputum in pneumonia)
11
Q
Purulent
A
Pus (infections), A walled off area of infection is called an abscess
12
Q
Hemorrhagic
A
Contains blood
