Who was Henry the Navigator?

A

Was the first major patron of explorers. In 1418, Prince Henry started the first school for oceanic navigation along with an astronomical observatory at Sagres, Portugal. In this school, people were trained in navigation, map-making, and science, in order to sail down the west coast of Africa.

A

Their marriage united the two warring kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. After conquering the Muslim state of Granada, Isabelle and Ferdinand successfully united the Iberian peninsula for the first time. Served as the patron to Christopher Columbus’ expedition to the New World.

Who were the Taino?

A

Were a major indigenous people in the Caribbean, inhabited present day Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. An estimated 1,000,000 Taino inhabited Hispaniola at the time of Columbus’ arrival in 1492. By 1507 it is believed less than 60,000 Taino remained on the island.

Who was Ferdinand Magellan?

A

A Portuguese explorer who served under Charles I of Spain. Led the first European expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, and circumnavigate the globe. Died during a skirmish with indigenous tribes in the Philippines in 1521. The remainder of his crew eventually made it back to Spain.

A

Known as the “Triple Alliance” the Empire consisted of three powerful states: Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan, which ruled the Valley of Mexico for much of the 15th century and early 16th century.

A

A Spanish conquistador who led the expedition that brought about the fall of the Aztec Empire, bringing large portions of Mexico under the Empire of Spain.

Who was Montezuma II?

A

Emperor of the Aztecs from 1502 – 1520. Ruled the Aztecs at the empire’s height and immediate decline. The portrayal of Moctezuma in history has mostly been colored by his role as ruler of a defeated nation, and many sources describe him as weak-willed and indecisive. The biases of some historical sources make it difficult to understand his actions during the Spanish invasion.

A

Capital of the Aztec Empire, present day Mexico City.

What happened to the Incas?

A

At its height the Inca Empire covered over 300,000 square miles, ranging 2,400 miles from north to south. The empire had an extensive network of roads that connected a diverse population of 12,000,000 inhabitants. Destroyed in 1532 after a band of conquistadors under the command of Francisco Pizarro captured and killed the emperor Atahualpa.

What was the Massacre of Cajamarca?

A

The ambush and capture of the Inca ruler Atahualpa by Francisco Pizarro and a small Spanish force on November 16, 1532. The Spanish killed thousands of Atahualpa’s counselors, commanders and unarmed attendants in the great plaza of Cajamarca, and caused his armed host outside the town to flee. The seizure of Atahualpa marked the opening stage of the conquest of the pre-Columbian Inca civilization of Peru.

Who was Juan Ponce De Leon?

A

– Served on Christopher Columbus’ second voyage to Hispaniola. In 1509 became the Crown Governor of Puerto Rico. Led the first expedition to Florida in 1513. Established the first Spanish colony near Key West in 1521, killed by natives shortly after.

A

St. Augustine in 1565.

Who was Panfilo de Narvaez?

A

In 1528 led a 200-man expedition to present day Tampa Bay. Explored Florida’s interior, but after getting cut off from supplies the expedition resulted in disaster. Skirmishes with native tribes and disease killed all but four members of the expedition, including Narvaez. The survivors walked for two years from Florida to Mexico before getting rescued.

Who was Hernando de Soto?

A

A veteran of Francisco Pizarro’s conquest of the Inca Empire. In May 1539 de Soto and his army sailed from Cuba to Florida. After leaving Florida de Soto headed northeast across Georgia and the Carolinas, crossing into Tennessee, Arkansas and portions of Texas. Eventually the expedition ended with de Soto’s death on June 20, 1542.
