section 1 Flashcards
what is ecology?
Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and living and non living components of their environment.
order the levels of ecological organization, starting from the largest.
biosphere,ecosystem,community,population,organism
from biosphere till organism, all contain living things, but go into detail with each level*.
(~20km thick) the biosphere is the broadest, most inclusive level of organizations-
what is the biosphere?
(~20km thick) the biosphere is the broadest, most inclusive level of organization.the biosphere includes the thin volume of earth and its atmosphere that supports life.(and all organisms are found within the biosphere)
all organisms are found within which layer?
all organisms are found within the biosphere
what is living things distribution throughout the biosphere?
living things are not distributed evenly throughout the biosphere, they are concentrated near the surface of land and oceans.
what is the ecosystem?
(smaller units of biosphere) ecosystem includes all of the organisms and the nonliving factors of the environment (physical and chemical)found in an area.
Ex. of living and non living factors in the pond ecosystem
living factors(organisms):fish,algae,turtles,plants,insects
non living factors:sunlight,water,pH,
differ between community and population
community includes all organisms in an area, all species.(like fish, turtles, plants, insects in the pond).
population includes all the members of a single species, living in the same place at the same time.
what is organism?
organism is the simplest level of organization.
what did the studies of scientists show for community and organism?
or what is the focus
community: scientists focus on species interactions, and how they shape the community.
organisms: Studies adaptations that help individuals survive environmental challenges.
the _________ of all organisms is central to the study of ecology. ( and what does that missing blank mean)
the theme of the interconnectedness, this thing means an ecosystem and studying ecology, no organism is isolated.
what does the
What does it mean by organisms are not isolated
Organisms i’m not isolated they depend on one another and their nonliving surroundings
write 2 examples for interconnectedness or interdependence of an organism in ecosystem
humans rely on plants for oxygen and plants rely on carbon dioxide from humans.
bees get food from the flowers, they spread pollen helping them grow seeds. These become food for others. Plants also give oxygen . so when bees get food from flowers the bees also help flowers reproduce.
what does ecology reveal to us?
ecology reveals how closely linked all life forms are to their environment
disturbance in ecosystem?
Interconnectedness means changes in one part of an ecosystem can affect the entire system
example of disturbance and its effect
high acorn production leads to an increase in deer and mice population, and more deer and mice means more tick population, and more tick population leads to more Lyme disease cases in humans(ticks spread bacteria to humans)
give example for each level
Biosphere all life on earth within its atmosphere, ecosystem a pond ecosystem with fish plants and sunlight ,community fish turtles and algae in the pond, population The population of turtles in a pond ,organism a single turtle adapting to its pond environment.
What is the focus for population
examine species-level dynamic, such as growth and reproduction
