Adjustment Disorder:
Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders:
Emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor within 3 months of the stressor occurring
Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment
Acute Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders:
Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence
For acute stress disorder, symptoms last 4 weeks or less
To diagnose PTSD, symptoms must last for at least one month
Major Depressive Disorder:
Depressive Disorders:
Depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in all or virtually all activities for a period of 2 weeks
Requires five or more of nine symptoms, with one of the symptoms being either depressed mood or loss of interest
The main criteria includes experiencing either a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities for a period of 2 weeks
Persistent Depressive Disorder
Characterized as more chronic and less severe than major depressive disorder
To meet the criteria for persistent depressive disorder, symptoms must last for at least 2 years.
Because it is so chronic, over time it can start to become confused with someone’s personality versus having a disorder
Bipolar Disorders:
Characterized by fluctuations in mood in both directions that exceed normal variation in mood
Bipolar I Disorder:
At least one manic episode in their lifetimes
Bipolar II Disorder:
Characterized by hypomanic episodes with depressive episodes
Cyclothymia
A more chronic but mild pattern of mood fluctuations between hypomania and mild depressive episodes
Manic and Hypomanic Episodes
Use the acronym DIG FAST to remember the symptoms of mania:
Distractibility
Impulsivity
Grandiosity
Flight of ideas
Activity increase
Sleep deficit
Talkativeness
To be considered a manic episode, it has to last one week, or the person is hospitalized
Hypomanic Episode
Represent a noticeable change from usual behavior and have been present to a significant degree
In contrast, a hypomanic episode is a milder form of mania that does not cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or necessitate hospitalizatio
Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder:
Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders
One or more symptoms of altered voluntary motor or sensory functioning
Illness Anxiety Disorder
Very worried about having or getting a serious illness
Somatic Symptom Disorder
The person actually has physical symptoms that are distressing and result in significant disruption to daily life
Factitious Disorder
Intentionally faking symptoms
