Q

What does the lymphatic system do?

A

It collects excess fluid that leaks out of the blood capillaries into the area between the cells

Q

What is interstitial fluid?

A

It is the excess fluid that brings nutrients to the cells and removes their wastes

Q

What happens to interstitial fluid?

A

90% of it returns to the capillaries, but 3 liters per day remain outside blood vessels

Q

What would happen to the body without the lymphatic system?

A

The body would begin to swell as more fluid is trapped in tissues

6
Q

How is swelling prevented?

A

The lymphatic system prevents this by collecting fluid and filtering it to remove dead cells and microorganisms, then returning the cleaned fluid to the circulatory system

Q

When does the lymphatic circulation begin?

A

It begins when the fluid between the cells enters the lymphatic capillaries, where it becomes known as lymph.

Q

What happens after lymph enters the lymphatic capillaries?

A

Lymph flows into larger vessels where it relies on contractions of skeletal and smooth muscles to circulate. One-way valves in these vessels prevent the lymph from flowing backward.

Q

What are nodes?

A

They are small rounded structures where lymph collects from the vessels

Q

What is the function of lymph nodes?

A

They filter the lymph and trap bacteria, viruses, fungi, and cell fragments for specialized immune cells to ingest and destroy.

Q

How does lymph return to the circulatory system?

A

Vessels carry lymph out of nodes. Two large vessels, one on each side of the body, enter veins just under collarbones, where lymph is returned to the blood.

Q

What happens if tissues or nodes are damaged or removed?

A

Lymph is not drained, and the body begins to swell

13
Q

How can swelling be brought down?

A

Through exercise, pressure bandages, and massages that exert pressure on tissues and nodes to “push” lymph into the vessels

16
Q

What is the function of tonsils?

A

They help to filter out bacteria and viruses that have escaped the body’s outer defenses

17
Q

What results in tonsil removal?

A

Too many pathogens enter the body, so the tonsils become swollen and infected and must be removed

18
Q

Where is the thymus located?

A

It is located behind the breastbone

19
Q

What is the function of the thymus?

A

It is important in developing lymphocytes to fight pathogens
- immature lymphocytes migrate from bone marrow to thymus to develop the ability to recognize specific microorganisms
- they leave the thymus and circulate through lymphatic and circulatory systems to protect the body.

20
Q

What is the spleen?

A

It is the largest organ in the lymphatic system

21
Q

What is the function of the spleen?

A

It filters and cleans the lymph of cell fragments and abnormal tissue
It also contains many lymphocytes and other white blood cells that destroy bacteria and foreign organisms.
