Overview
A
- very common inflammatory reaction to Malassezia yeast that thrives on seborrheic skin
- Malssezia is normal flora
- Chronic condition that can be controlled but not cured

Presentation
A
erythematous scaling patches on the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, eyelids, central face, nasolabial folds, external auditory canals, central chest

In what cases can seborrheic dermatitis be worse?
A
- HIV
- Parkinson’s Disease

Presentation on darker skin types
A
hypopigmented

Treatment
A
- Topical ketoconazole cream BID: reduce yeast counts
- Low-potency topical steroid for facial flares: BID X 1-2 weeks for flares
- Antidandruff shampoo: scalp and chest. Ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione. Lather, leave on 10 min, rinse, repeat 3-5Xweek

Unique scabies pattern on the skin
A
- Burrows appear as 0.5–1.5 cm grey irregular tracks in the web spaces between the fingers, on the palms and wrists.
- Thin thread-like linear “tunnel”

Other scabies presentations on the skin
A
- Excoriations causing erosions are common and can destroy burrows
- Vesicles may also be present
- Red itchy nodules to penis, scrotum are scabies till proven otherwise
