Sebastian And Hernandez-Gil Flashcards
What was their aim
Find out if capacity of phonological loop increases with age by using digit span as a measure of phonological capacity
What was the procedure?
570 volunteers from Spanish schools age 5-17.
Divided into 5 age groups, average digit span recorded for each group.
They were read increasing sequences of digits and had to recall them in correct order, digits read at 1/s and digit lost increasing by one per sequence.
Results
5 year olds have fairly low digit span and increases steadily to 11 then slows down and becomes stable. Suggests there is a developmental trend
Conclusion
Digit span increases with age and develops when children sub vocalise. Spanish digit spans shorter than Anglo Saxon digit span due to length of Spanish words. Ageing affects digit span rather than dementia.
