Q

Turns Around a Point

A
  1. Pre-maneuver check.
  2. Select a ground reference point clear of obstacles.
  3. Enter the maneuver with a direct tail wind, altitude 600’ to 1000’ AGL.
  4. Set power to required rpm to maintain a constant airspeed slightly below VA.
  5. Enter on the downwind on either side of the reference point at a distance of about
    ½ mile radius.
  6. Abeam your point, bank the airplane (not to exceed 45˚ of bank) towards the
reference point and begin a constant radius turn. This will be the steepest angle of
bank as this is the leg with the highest ground speed.
  7. Continue to fly a smooth circular ground track gradually reducing the angle of
bank as the turn progresses into the wind, reducing the ground speed, so as to
maintain an equidistant track around the ground reference point. Divide attention
between traffic, the reference point and the engine and flight instruments.
    EXITING THE MANEUVER:
  8. After the completion of at least one 360˚ turn exit on the same heading as the
    entry.
