luminous flame features
obtained when air hole is closed. unsteady, less hot and more visible. orange/yellowish-orange on outside, blue on inside. used when Bunsen burner is left unattended for a short while.
non-luminous flame features
obtained when air hole is opened. steady, hotter and less visible. pale blue on outside, dark blue on inside. used for heating.
safety precautions when using Bunsen burner
1) close the air hole before lighting the burner. this prevents too much oxygen from entering the burner and thus a phenomenon known as strike back, where the flame burns within the barrel.
2) do not touch the barrel of the Bunsen burner while in use/immediately after use.
