FWE: forms of energy Flashcards
what is energy?
energy is the capacity to do work
SI unit of energy
joule (j)
what is potential energy?
stored energy due to a body’s position or condition
what is chemical potential energy?
the energy stored in fuels such as petrol or food that can be released through chemical reactions
what is elastic potential energy?
the energy an object has when it is stretched or compressed
what is gravitational potential energy?
the energy an object has because of its position or location.
it depends on the mass of the object and the height of the object (relative to a reference level, usually the ground)
what is kinetic energy?
the energy a body has due to its motion. it depends on the mass and speed of the body.
what is heat?
energy that flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. aka the flow of thermal energy.
what is the main source of heat during the day, and how is heat used?
- the sun
- in homes: cooking, ironing clothes, heating water. in factories: melting metals, creating steam to turn turbines, making chemicals react
when is sound produced?
when objects vibrate and it is transmitted through a material
what is electrical energy?
energy that is transferred by the flow of charged particles.
state the principle of conservation of energy
energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can be transferred from one object to another, or converted from one form to another
