SD & Climate Change Flashcards
What is sustainable development?/
SD is development that uses enough resources to meet the needs of the development but does not compromise the ability of future generations to develop what they need in turn
What is a carbon footpring?
Measure of impact on the environment, often measured in carbon dioxide emitted.
What are co-benefits?
The consequences of taking positive action to combat climate change that have further reaching benefits on population health. Eg. an action that inevitably leads to reduced mortality or morbidity.
Example. Banning certain pesticides - directly benefits pollinators, indirectly leads to increased nutrients and less neurotoxins in food farmed for human consumption. Increased zinc, leads to reduced growth stunts in children and increased protection against GI infections, which has knock on effects to the health system etc.
Define Contraction and Convergence?
A model framework for reducing greenhouse gasses on a global scale in a socially just way.
Define Mitigation?
Human intervention that takes place over the long term intended to reduce greenhouse gasses.
What causes climate change?
a combination of things but effectively caused by the excessive fluctuation of greenhouse gasses that usually make the earth habitable (greenhouse effect), but are not gathering at unprecented levels in the atmosphere, directly effecting the weather, which occurs below the tropopause.
