SD and Barriers Flashcards
4 Tenants of Osteopathic Medicine
The person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit
The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance
Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated
Rational treatment is based upon understanding and implementing the other 3 tenets
Somatic Dysfunction
Impaired or altered function of related components of the somatic (body framework) system
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)
Therapeutic application of manually guided forces to improve physiologic function and/or support homeostasis altered by a SD
Acute Somatic Dysfunction
immediate or short-term impairment of altered function of related components of the somatic system
Characteristics of Acute SD
Vasodilation Edema Tenderness Pain Tissue contraction
Chronic Somatic Dysfunction
Impairment or altered function of related components of the somatic system
Characteristics of Chronic SD
Tenderness Itching Fibrosis Paresthesia Tissue Contraction
Diagnostic Criteria for Somatic Dysfunction
TART Tissue texture abnormalities Asymmetry of structure or motion Restriction of Motion Tenderness
Tissue Texture Abnormalities
A palpable change in tissues from skin to periarticular structures
(Bogginess, thiccening, stringiness, ropiness, firmness, temp. change, moisture)
TTA Signs and Symptoms
Represents any combo of signs: vasodilation, edema. flaccidity, hypertonicity, contracture, fibrosis
Associated w/symptoms: itching, tenderness, pain, parethesia
Tone
Normal feel of muscle in the relaxed state
Hypertonicity and hypotonicity
Contraction
Normal tone of a muscle when it shortens or is activated against resistance
Contracture
Abnormal shortening of a muscle due to fibrosis. Most often in the tissue itself, often result of chronic condition. Muscle is no longer able to reach its full normal length
Asymmetry
Absence of symmetry of position or motion
Dissimilarity in corresponding parts or organs on opposite sides of the body that are normally alike
Determined by vision or palpation
Restriction of Motion
A resistance or impediment to movement (duh)
