what are the major categories of sculpture
free standing sculpture
- 3D sculptures that you can walk around and view from different angles.
relief sculpture
- attached to a flat surface and slightly stick out; they are meant to be seen only from the front.
linear sculpture
- made with thin materials like wire or neon tubes, creating an illusion of shape and depth.
As compare to relief sculpture, it inhibits three dimensional spaces in the same way that living things do. This kind of sculpture cannot be appreciated from only a single viewpoint but must be circle and explored.
Free Standing Sculpture
It grows out of flat, two dimensional backgrounds and its projection into three-dimensional space is relatively shallow. The back of the relief sculpture is not meant to be seen, the entire design can be understood from a frontal view.
Relief Sculpture
Emphasizes construction with thin, elongated items such as wire or neon tubing. It puzzles the viewer and tries to decide whether they are linear or full round.
Linear Sculpture
It permits the sculptor to redo or rework his material and introduce details as they sees fit and necessary.
Additive Method
It involves removing unwanted portions of the raw material to reveal the form or figure that the sculptor has visualized.
Subtractive Method
Any material that can be transformed from a plastic, molten, or fluid state can be molded or cast into a work of sculpture.
Substitution Method
Materials such as clay are shaped by skilled use of the hands; the artists take a single lump of clay and skillfully transform it, as it turns on potter’s wheel, into a final shape
Manipulation Method
An artist may combine found objects to create a artwork; natural or man-made object, or fragment of an object, that is found (or sometimes bought) by an artist.
Found Method
It refers to the material used by the sculptor in making his art piece. There are many available mediums for a sculptor to work with depending on his liking

Manipulation Method – Shaping soft materials like clay with hands or tools.
Found Method – Using and combining existing objects to form art.
