Introducing the character of scrooge”Solitary as an oyster
Forced lonliness “ solitary” locked up as in prison. “Oyster” hard shell on an outside but soft on inside. Hard outer shell forces scrroge to be lonely. Dickens could use shell as capitalism. Only think that matters is money and yourself. Prioritises money/work. Other characters chip away at capitalism.
Scrooge being shown streets on christmas morning by ghost of christmas present “Smooth white sheet of snow upon the roof, and with the dirtier snow upon the ground
Embodies capitalism, shows injustice between society. Poor and rich.snow is symbolic of people and roof is upper class. Because it is smooth, they have easy lives,no one has touched it,life of rich is easy, perfect on the surface.dirtier snow getting trampled on.pathetic fallacy. Snow on roof is not important in real life. Snow on ground is fun good relationships. Scrooge nice house, good life on surface but cratchit family poor on surface but have love affection.no one cares about scrooge,no affection
Marleys ghost says to scrooge
“No space or regret can make amends for ones lifes opportunity misused”
Scrooge sees gaining wealth as opportunity but could mean finding love, helping people is opportunities.”misused”abuse of power and blessings. Scrooge is a warning to use money to support others. Scrooge feels regret on how he treated cratchits but feeling doesn’t do anything.scrooge keeps money to himself
Dickens describes scrooge at the end with “He became as good a friend ,as good a master, and as a good man.”
Rule of 3,repetition. Second chance, redemption.change is a process “became” no ones born perfect therfore allow people to change. Build up to friend, went from cold to open to others.change what boss he is. Change capitalism views. Never to late to change.
Are there no prison”
Scrooge is microciwm of upper bictorian class. He is callous. He thinks the poor as criminals
