Film Theory
Conceptual frames for understanding film’s relation to reality, the other arts, individual reviewers, and society at large.
Film Analysis
How specific features of a film relate to one another in the structure of the film or in a body of films.
Character
The subject(s) of a story.
Character Arc
The sequential development of the character across the length of the story.
Plot
The basic premise of the story; what the story is about.
Plot Points
An incident or event that redirects the story.
Setting
The location(s) of the action.
Storyline
A narrowly defined sequence of events involving one character; there may be several storylines in a screenplay.
Story Arc
The sequential progression of the story across time.
Backstory
The history of a character or situation that explains their current action.
Pathos
A quality in speech, writing, or events that evoke pity or sadness.
Irony
Perceived notion of an incongruity, or a gap, between an understanding of reality, or expectation of reality, and what actually happens.
Action
What happens in the story.
Screenplay
A story told with pictures.
