Screening for Referral Flashcards
what regions of the body may systemic disease refer to?
- Back
- Shoulder
- neck
- chest/ribs/
- hip/groin
- sacrum/pelvis
what are the 3 options that PTs have after each patient encounter?
- Treat the patient
- Refer the patient
- Treat and refer
what are the 5 steps of the Goodman Screening Model?
- Client history
- Assessing for risk factors
- Clinical presentation
- pain types/pain patterns
- Associated signs and symptoms of systemic disease
- Review of systems
How do you determine if a patient presenting with 1 or more red flags needs to be referred to a physician?
if there is a pattern (cluster of 2-3 symptoms) that suggests viscerogenic or systemic origin to their plan
T/F: the presence of 1 red flag is enough to warrant a referral to a physican
FALSE
it is not as concerning it may just merit a discussion with their physician or keep in their mind
define constitutional symptoms
group of non-specific symptoms that can relate to many different systems within the body and aren’t related to any one thing
list various constitutional symptoms
- fever
- diaphoresis
- chills
- sweats (night or day)
- appepitie loss
- N/V/D
- pallor
- dizziness/syncope (fainting)
- faitigue/malaise/weakness
- weight loss
List examples of red flags in history
- age over 40
- personal or family history of cancer
- no known cause, unknown etiology, insidious onset
- recent report of confusion or increased confusion could be a neurologic sign, drug-induced, result of abuse or assult
- recent (last 6 weeks) infection especially when followed by neurologic symptoms 1-3 weeks later, joint pain or back pain
- recurrent colds or flu with cyclical pattern
- recent history of trauma in adult with osteopenia/osteoporosis
- history of immunosuppression
- history of injection drug use
differentiate from a sign and a symptom
- signs are observable
- symptoms are reported and percieved by the patient but cannot be observed by someone else
describe a systems review
a brief or limited exam of the anatomic and physiologic status of the cardiovascular/pulmonary, integumentary, MSK, and neuromuscular systems
also includes assessment of pts communcication ability, affect, cognition, language and learning style
describe a review of systems
categorize all compliants and associated signs and symptoms and determine if they pertain to a specific system
ask all patients general, integumentary and musculoskeletal/neurologic questions sets
what are the 4 red flag factors found to be informative for vertebral fractures?
- prolonged steroid use
- age >70
- significant trauma
- female
