Screening for Disease Flashcards
what is population screening?
certain populations are screened to test for potential diseases
what are the disadvantages of population screening?
a large number of people need to be screened
how can the amount of people that need to be screened be reduced?
programmes can be aimed at high risk people
what makes a good screening programme?
no false positives, detects at an early stage, ethical acceptance
what is accuracy?
how close you are to the true value of the quantity that was measured
what is precision?
how closely two or more measurements are to each other
what is sensitivity?
the percentage of individuals with the disease that get a positive result
what is the sensitivity equation?
true positives/+ and - x100
what is specificity?
percentage of individuals that get a negative result
what is the specificity equation?
true negatives/+ and - x100
what is prevelance?
proportion of particular population that is found to be affected with the disease
what is the prevalence equation?
no. of people with the disease/no. of people measured x100
what is the difference in purpose in screening and testing?
screening is to detect disease indicators and testing is to establish presence of disease
what is the difference in target for screening and testing?
screening is for very large numbers of asymptomatic people and testing is for symptomatic patients with positive screening test
what is the difference in testing method for screening and testing?
simple screening and testing is invasive and expensive
