what is a proxy measurement?
measurement that is not directly relevant and is used for comparative purposes
what are scattergraphs used for?
in order to compare how closely related two variables are
what is epidemiology?
the study of the cause, spread and control of disease
what is the incidence of disease?
the amount of new cases diagnosed in a given period
what are the 4 main causes of death?
injuries, infection, non-communicable diseases, maternal conditions
what is morbidity rate?
the number of cases of disease in relation to the number of people at risk of developing it
what does an epidemiology surveillance system involve?
systematic collection of data, evaluation of data and prompt communication of findings in order to take action
what is sporadic disease?
a single episode of infection or a collection of cases within a family, that is unrelated to other episodes
what is endemic disease?
disease habitually present within a given geographical area, population exposed from birth
what is epidemic disease?
occurance in community or region of an outbreak of illness in excess of normal expectancy
what is pandemic disease?
the spread of disease across continents
