What is this?
Aphthous ulceration
- one of the most common lesions (affects 20% of the population)
- small round
- tend to be painful
- usually disappear within a couple of weeks (resolve quickly)
- can be associated with hormones
- usually come in crops (1 to 5 at a time)
- recurrent
What is this?
Lipoma
- made of adipose tissue (fatty lumps)
- Not very common intra-orally (making up 0.1 to 5% of intra-oral benign lesions)
- can occur anywhere in the oral cavity
- typically not painful or tender
- buccal mucosa common site
- usually mobile
What is this?
Mucocoele
- most commonly affects the inside of the lower lip
- when saliva escapes into the tissue rather than out of the duct
- usually a result of trauma
What is this?
Epulis (general term)
- swelling on the gum
- number of lesions that can cause this appearance
- this one is a pyogenic granuloma
What is this?
leaf fibroma
- caused by chronic irritation
- commonly seen in denture wearers
- flat as it is compressed under the denture on a short stalk (pedunculated)
What is this?
Denture induced hyperplasia
What is this?
Papillary hyperplasia
- often caused by dentures instability
- candida is usually a superimposed infection (more a bystander than a cause)
What is this?
Papilloma
- caused by low risk HPV
- finger like projections
- recommended excision
What is this?
Tori mandibularis
- bony growth on the floor of mouth
- generally dont require treatment unless interfering with speech, mastication etc
Where are tori usually found on the maxilla?
midline of the hard palate
