Advise

A

Will have to undress from waist up - advise not to wear dress
No talcum powder or deodorant
All radiographers are female (who work for screening programme)

1 in 20 recalled
1 in 4 recalled are diagnosed with breast cancer

A

BRCA1/2 mutations

Microcalcifications

A

Calcium salts - too small to feel, don’t cause pain
Common and develop naturally as breasts age. Can be seen in association with benign changes such as cysts and fibroadenomas, in response to trauma

Can be a sign of DCIS!!!!!!

DCIS

A

Cancer cells have formed in the ducts but have not invaded through the basement membrane to surrounding breast tissue

Necrotic cancer cells often calcify to produce microcalcification - linear, branching pattern

Annual clinic apt and mammogram for 5 years

Excision

A

Area localised on morning of surgery
Fine wire inserted under mammographic guidance - stereotactic wire localisation
Helps the surgeon identify the area during theatre
