What is a patrol?
“A detachment of ground, sea, or air forces sent out for the purpose of gathering information or carrying out a destructive, harassing, mopping-up, or security mission.” MCWP 3-11.3
Recon Patrol - “Gather information about location and characteristics of friendly or hostile positions and installations, terrain, and obstacles. They generally avoid combat and rely on stealth to accomplish the mission.” MCWP 3-11.3
Combat Patrol - “Are assigned missions which usually require them to actively engage the enemy. As a secondary mission, they collect and report information about the enemy and terrain.” MCWP 3-11.3

Reconnaissance (RAZ) Patrol
- Route - directed effort to obtain detailed information about a specific route; enemy could influence movement along route
- Area - obtain info about tx and en activity; prescribed area
- Zone - obtain info on routes, obstacles, terrain, enemy; defined by boundaries
Combat Patrols (SCAR)
- Security
- Contact
- Ambush
- Raid
Security Patrol
Sent out from a stationary unit to search the local area, to detect any infiltration by enemy forces
And to engage and destroy them within the capability of the patrol
Protects the main unit from ambush or surprise
Contact Patrol
Establish and/or maintain contact with an enemy or friendly force when the definite location is unknown
Maintaining contact though: direct fires, IDF, observation
Avoids decisive engagement with the enemy
