The aftermath of Wallace after he and Andrew Murray defeated the English in the Battle of Stirling.

  1. Wallace escaped the carnage and took full responsibility of not winning.
  2. Andrew Murray died of infections from the Battle of Stirling and Wallace took full control over the army.
  3. Wallace became guardian as many thought of him to be powerful as he won the Battle of Stirling, they thought he could win any battle against the English.
  4. Wallace resigned from being guardian as he couldn’t handle it on his own.
  5. Wallace went to France and Rome for support and to ask the Pope for his help, they weren’t interested.
  6. Wallace didn’t stop trying there.
  7. Wallace was then taken to England and put on trial for treason: Wallace claimed he could not be guilty of treason as he had never sworn on oath of fealty to Edward.
  8. However, he was eventually found guilty and sentenced to death.
  9. Wallace was brutally executed at Smithfield, London in August 1305.
  10. Before his sentence, Wallace was captured in 1305, he was betrayed by a Scottish Knight, sir John Menteith.
  11. Wallace remained outside of Edward’s peace and was to be punished for his role in the conflict.
  12. In 1305 Scottish Resistance appeared to be over, as most of the leading nobles had accepted terms from Edward.

Why were Wallace and Murray made joint guardians of Scotland and what was their purpose of fighting for Scotland and against England?

  • Wallace and Murray had a win against England.
  • They both were fighting in the name of John Balliol.
  • Balliol was the King of Scotland, he was locked up by Edward I after interfering with his policy.
  • Wallace and Murray both wanted Balliol imprisoned so they fought against the English army to release Balliol.
  • Wallace had control over the common army.
  • Wallace and Murray were very smart and clever with fighting, they had many tactics.

Simple facts about John Balliol and Edward I.

  • John Balliol had been the last one to allow Edward to be his overlord.
  • Edward had chose who to become the king of Scots and in 1292 on the 17th November, Edward chose John Balliol to be the king of Scots as he thought Balliol would be the best claim to the throne of Scotland.
  • Edwards overlordship - Edward reminded Balliol that he had to be a fair and just king or else he would face interference with Edward himself and it didn’t take long till Balliol actually did.
