Celtic Rock
Celtic Rock is a mixture of rock instruments and Celtic (traditional) instruments i.i. fiddle and bagpipes
Gaelic Psalm
In the Free Church in the highlands of Scotland psalms are sung unaccompanied (A cappela) in Gaelic
The priest starts and leads the singing and is then joined by everyone else
Bothy Ballad
These songs were written, or rather made up, to describe the work and lifestyle of a farm labourer
Bothy was the name given to the houses that the unmarried farm labourers lived in
Sung A Cappella - unaccompanied only by men
Waulking Song
As they worked, the women would sing a song. This would help them keep the rhythm of the waulking
There would be a soloist who would ‘Call’ the song and the others would respond
Sung A cappella only by women
Pibroch
Pibrock is the name given to solo bagpipes
This allows the piper to show off his skills
It uses lots of grace notes/ornaments to decorate the song
Clarsach
Clarsah is the Gaelic name for harp
The Clarsach is a small harp, that is played by plucking the strings with your fingers
Bodhran
Bodhran is a Celtic drum used in folk music
Evolved from the tambourine

- Often through travelling people
- Unaccompanied
Mouth Music
- Music to dance to
- No instruments (unaccompanied)
- Very rhythmic
