Cross Rhythms
Two conflicting rhythms are heard together
Contrary Motion
Two parts move in opposite directions, e.g. as one part ascends (moves up) the other part descends (moves down)
Whole Tone Scale
Impressionist music uses the whole tone scale
A scale that uses tones only - there is always one note in-between, this sounds mysterious/dreamy
Gospel
Gospel music comes from African American culture and was derived from Blues music
Gospel is music based on religious text from the bible, mostly from the first four books of the New Testamen. This was written to praise and give thanks to God

Short ideas which are repeated and layered in top of each other
Indian Music - Sitar and Tabla
The Sitar and Tabla are traditional Indian instruments
The sitar is an Indian version of a guitar
The tabla is an Indian drum which accompanies the sitar
Walking Bass
A walking bass line is an accompaniment most commonly found in Jazz and Blues music
The bass line “walks” up and down giving the idea that someone is walking
Pitch Bend
When you bend the note, most commonly used on guitars
Reverb
An echo effect added to voices or instrument in order to make them sound as if they are playing in a vathedral or big hall
Distortion
An effect added to a guitar to make it sound fuzzy
