A

THE SECOND BISHOPS WAR

  • In 1640, under Wentworth’s guidance, Charles called short parliament
  • But most MPs wanted their grievances addressed before any subsidies were granted
  • They were dissolved after just 3 weeks, and Charles instead got a subsidy from Ireland - granted £20,000 and issued 17 new canons
  • Aug 1640 Charles built another army to fight the scots, but they invaded first
  • English army defeated at Newburn
  • Charles then forced to sign TREATY OF RIPON - where he had to pay £850 per day to the scots
  • He was under unprecedented financial and political pressure, so called parliament 3rd Nov 1640
