- ## CHARLES SCOTTISH CORONATION - was 8 years late, slowest Royal progress in history, only stayed in Scotland for 2 weeks, service held at Holyrood palace (not in keeping with tradition), Anglican service

- Leading puritans supported the Scottish rebels
- Some English lords refused to swear an oath to Charles
- Leader of the Scots was a 30 years war veteran - very skilled
- He was under prepared and ill equipped, so forced into negotiation

TREATY OF BERWICK - June 1639
- Both sides would disband their armies and Charles would agree to recall Scottish Parliament
(But really, it was just used to buy time for both sides)

Describe the key events of the 2nd Bishops War
A
THE SECOND BISHOPS WAR
- In 1640, under Wentworth’s guidance, Charles called short parliament
- But most MPs wanted their grievances addressed before any subsidies were granted
- They were dissolved after just 3 weeks, and Charles instead got a subsidy from Ireland - granted £20,000 and issued 17 new canons
- Aug 1640 Charles built another army to fight the scots, but they invaded first
- English army defeated at Newburn
- Charles then forced to sign TREATY OF RIPON - where he had to pay £850 per day to the scots
- He was under unprecedented financial and political pressure, so called parliament 3rd Nov 1640
