Bach. premiere on April 1, 1725, Leipzig for Easter Sunday. oratorio, originally titled “Kommt, gehet und eilet.” renamed in 1735. Based on a secular cantata bwv 249a. text probably by Picander. No narrator, 4 voices: Simon Peter (tenor), John the Apostle (bass), Mary Magdalene (alto), Mary Jacobe (soprano).

A

1803-1804. premiered at Prince Lobkowitz’ palace in Vienna. originally dedicated to Napolean, then retracted after he named himself Emperer.
“first Romantic symphony”. length, titled specific movements, stretched the harmonic fabric, development and codas are long. intro is short, just two chords. first time to have 3 horns in a Scherzo in a symphony (usually was a Minuet).

2 mvmt: ABA funeral march
3 mvmt: Scherzo
4 mvmt: theme and variations

Berlioz, 1830. Program Symphony about an artist who is in despair becuase of unrequited love. Poisons himself with opium, hallucinates about killing his love and then being marched to the scaffold.
uses the idée fixe, the theme (harriet smithson, his obsession). utlizes the Dies Irae. often has 2 themes separate and then overlap (did this in R&J also).
