Bach: “I stand with one food in the grave”. church cantata. Leipzig, 1729. for three different voices, alto, tenor, and bass. opening sinfonia for oboe and orchestra.
Cantata 202 “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten”
Bach, secular cantata for soprano. “wedding cantata.” composed maybe for his wedding to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1721, though the style is from earlier in 1714. oboe part in the first and seventh arias.
Easter Oratorio
Bach. premiere on April 1, 1725, Leipzig for Easter Sunday. oratorio, originally titled “Kommt, gehet und eilet.” renamed in 1735. Based on a secular cantata bwv 249a. text probably by Picander. No narrator, 4 voices: Simon Peter (tenor), John the Apostle (bass), Mary Magdalene (alto), Mary Jacobe (soprano).

Bela Bartok, 1943 (revised 1945). premiered by the BSO and Koussevitsky in 1944. triple winds, each instrument has it’s own moment to be showcased, which is why it’s a concerto for orchestra.
Symphony no. 3 Beethoven
1803-1804. premiered at Prince Lobkowitz’ palace in Vienna. originally dedicated to Napolean, then retracted after he named himself Emperer.
“first Romantic symphony”. length, titled specific movements, stretched the harmonic fabric, development and codas are long. intro is short, just two chords. first time to have 3 horns in a Scherzo in a symphony (usually was a Minuet).

premiered in 1808, same night as the 6th symphony in Vienna at the Theatre an der Wien.

premiered 1808. “Pastoral Symphony”, first programmatic work, with titles for each movement. 4th/5th mvmts linked.

1811-1812. premiered 1813. known for dotted rhythms.
Beethoven 9
premiered 1824 in Vienna. text based on Friederich Schiller, “ode to joy”. employed chorus for final movement and soloists. Commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of London. Beethoven conducted.

Berlioz, 1839. Wagner was at the premiere. Program music, libretto by Emile Deschamps Symphonie Dramatique choral work inspiration in 1827 by Harriet Smithson Pagannini helped fund the premiere

Symphonie Fantastique
Berlioz, 1830. Program Symphony about an artist who is in despair becuase of unrequited love. Poisons himself with opium, hallucinates about killing his love and then being marched to the scaffold.
uses the idée fixe, the theme (harriet smithson, his obsession). utlizes the Dies Irae. often has 2 themes separate and then overlap (did this in R&J also).
Bizet Symphony in C 1
composed in 1855 while studying at the Paris Conservatoire, was 17 when he wrote it. studied with Gounod.
Brahms Haydn Variations
- Theme and Variations. “St. Anthony theme from Haydn”. first written for two pianos, then orchestrated. first performance by the Vienna Phil with Brahms conducting. 5 measure phrases, which is unusual.
Brahms Violin Concerto
- written for his friend Joseph Joachim. premiere in Leipzig in 1879. follows standard fast-slow-fast format
Brahms Symphony 1 in c minor
premiered 1876, took him 21 years to write it, under the shadow of Beethoven. Sometimes called “Beethoven’s Tenth.” first mvmt is sonata form

Scottish Symphony
Mendelssohn, 1842 in Leipzig. (took him about 13 years to write it). Inspired by the Scottish countryside, where he also found the inspiration for the Hebrides Overture. His 5th symphony to be composed, but the 3rd published. All movements are attaca.
