Rubato
Fluctuates between fast and slow tempo.
Fermata
Notes held longer.
Ritenuto
Reduction of speed.
Accelerando
Gradual increase in speed/tempo.
Ritardando
Gradual decrease in speed/tempo.
Rallentando
Slowing down of tempo.
Slur
Connects different notes together.
Tie
Connects the same notes together.
Accent
Play a note or beat with emphasis.
Staccato
Sharp, detached and/or separated note.
Tremolo
The rapid repetition of a musical tone or of alternating tones to produce a rapid wavering sound.
Tenuto
Hold or sustain a note.
Crescendo
When the sound of a note increases.
Decrescendo
When the sound of a note increases.
Double Bar Line.
Two single bar lines drawn close together indicate the start of a new section.
Tempo/speed indication (Allegro Modestoso = 72)
This can be as well as or instead of a metronome mark representing how many beats per minute.
Clef
Represents the pitch of a written note.
Accidental
Indicates the raising/lowering of a note.
Key signature
Flats or sharps that indicate the key of of a composition.
