Scope of LA Flashcards
What is ..
- anaesthesia
- analgesia
- local anaesthesia
- Anaesthesia = loss of all sensation
- Analgesia = loss of pain sensation
- Local Anaesthesia = a method of anaesthesia that acts in a local area of the body and does not result in a loss of consciousness
GDC Scope of Practice for dental therapist
You can undertake the following if you are trained, compentent and imdemnified:
- give infiltraion and inferior alveolar block
What are the main techniques of LA?
- Topical (surface)
- infiltration anaesthesia
- regional anaesthesia
- supplementary techniques
What is the main reasons to use LA?
- Pain control
- during a procedure
- post operatively
- Diagnosis (helps to diagnose pulp pain)
- Haemostasis (due to vasoconstrictor)
What is Topical Anaesthesia and its uses?
Topical Anaesthesia is used to anaesthesia of surface tissues.
- aid to pain free injections
- very minor oral surgery
- abcess incision
- palate for impressions
How does infiltration anaesthesia work and how is its effectiveness determined?
Anaesthesia achieve by diffusion of anaesthetic solution to site of action and site of operation. e.g root apex of tooth
Effectiveness determined by the permeability of the tissues (especially bone) through which the solution has to pass
What are some Infiltraton limitations?
- Thicker Bone Zygomatic Proccess
- Divergent roots
- Very dense outer cortical bone
Lidocaine will not work on lower molars whereas Articaine should
What does Regional (block) Anaesthesia do?
What are some examples of Nerves commonly blocked?
Blocks a whole nerve trunk, often at some distance from the site of operation.
Nerves commonly blocked:
- inferior alveolar
- mantal and incisive
- lingual
- long buccal
- greather palatine
- naso palatine
