Scoliosis - Leik book Flashcards
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Lateral curvature of the spine that may be accompanied by spinal rotation. More common in girls (80% of patients). Painless and asymptomatic.
Scoliosis screening test
Adam’s Forward Bend Test
Adam’s Forward Bend Test
Bend forward with both arms hanging free. Look for asymmetry of spine, scapula, thoracic,
and lumbar curvature. Check height. Measure the Cobb angle (degree of spinal curvature).
Full-spine x-rays are used to measure degree of curvature.
Cobb angle

PA spinal xray used to measure Cobb angle
Curves less than 20 degrees
Observe and monitor for changes in spinal curvature
Curves of 20 to 40 degrees:
Bracing (i.e., Milwaukee brace)
Curves greater than 40 degrees:
Surgical correction with Harrington rod used on
spine and other options

Refer all patients with scoliosis to a pediatric orthopedic specialist
