Scoliosis Definitions Flashcards
Apical Vertebra
Most rotated and laterally placed vertebra within a curve
Double Major Curve
Two structural curves that are within 10 degrees of each other
Menarche
Beginning of the menstrual cycle
usually around 12-13 years of age
Major curve
Largest curve; usually the most vertebral rotation
Minor Curve
Smaller curve; usually has the least degree of vertebral rotation
Evaluate to analyze if the curve is compensatory
Peak height velocity
Growth rate of at least 9cm/year
calculated by standing height measurements of 6 month intervals for a minimum of 2 1/2 years
Risser Sign
Indication of skeletal maturity; 5 grades
Tanner Sign
Development of secondary sexual characteristics; 5 stages
Examples, growth of breast tissue in females and “voice change” in males
Scoliosis
Lateral curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees
Non-structural curve
Rotary component will correct upon lateral flexion
Structural Curve
Rigid rotary component; will not connect during lateral flexion
Compensatory Curve
Curve that develops secondary to a primary curve to maintian body alignment
Null point
Location where the vertebral inclination changes direction
