SCLOA Flashcards
Define the SCLOA
The scientific study of individuals and groups in social and cultural conditions
What were the results of Asch’s initial study on conformity?
32% of participants conformed continuingly and 72% conformed at least once
What is the difference between normative and informational influence?
Normative influence - people want to fit in with a group
Informational influence - an individual believes the group is better than they are
What theory does the Gergely et al study (2002) support?
Social Learning Theory
What does the SLT theory state about learning? (A.R.R.M)
Attention – Paying attention to the model.
Retention – Retain the behaviour of the model that was observed.
Reproduction – Replicate the behaviour of the learning model.
Motivation – Learners must want to display what they have learnt from the learning model
What was the conclusion of the Gergely et al study?
very young infants have the ability to observe a behaviour and use this information to decide what part of the model’s behaviour is desirable to imitate
Define fundamental attribution error
“the tendencey to attribute another’s behaviour to dispositional qualities, rather than the situation”
Ross et al. conducted a study which supports the FAE theory, what did the study involve?
An artifical game show, participants were either show hosts, contestants or audience members. Audience members had to rank the intelligence of hosts and contestants. They consistently ranked the host as more intelliegent and therefore failed to attribute the behaviour to situational factors.
Define the delf serving bias theory
“People’s tendency to attribute positive events to their own character and negative events to external factors”
Which study supports the SSB? What did they do?
Johnson et al - participants were students who taught young children simple maths. The children were tested twice, if they improved then their ‘teacher’ would attribute this to their ability as a teacher. If they failed, the ‘teacher’ would attribute the failure to the child’s lack of ability to learn.
Which compliance technique does Cialdini’s study demonstrate?
Door in the face (large request followed by a smaller one)
What did Cialdini’s study involve?
Experimenters pretended to be from a “County Youth Counselling Programme” and went to universities to ‘recruit’ studnets to look after a group of juveniles on a day trip. 83% refused. Another day they were asked to be part of a programme 2 hours a week for 2 years. Everyone refused.
