Paper 3 Flashcards
Define covert observation
Participants are not aware that they are being observed
Define overt observation
Participants are aware that they are being observed and what behaviour is being observed
What is it called when the researcher ‘plays a part’ in the experiment (may interact with participants)
Participant observation
Define non-participant observation
Researcher is not involved/doen not interact with participants
Naturalistic environment
Carried out in a natural environment (observation of animals/people)
Labatory based
Carried out in an artificial environment
What type of case study is it if the individiual is studied over a long period of time?
Longitudinal
Semi-structured Interview
Researcher prepares themes to focus on but not rigid set of questions
Narrative Interview
Researcher may ask one question and then allow the participant to speak freely
Focus Group
Gruoup discussion where researcher usually allows free conversation so there is little structure
Problems with a focus group
Participants may conform to group or hold back information from group
Method Triangulation
Using different techniques to gather data (e.g. interviews, observations etc)
Data triangulation
Using data gathered from various qualitative methods
Researcher triangulation
Using multiple researchers to agree on interpretations (helps to avoid researcher bias)
