What is scleroderma?

Aka systemic sclerosis
Fibrosis across multiple organ systems

What are the 2 subcategories of scleroderma? Where do they affect?
A
Diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis = affects multiple systems
Limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis = affects fewer organs sparing the kidneys and skin on trunk and proximal limbs

A
Woman aged 30-50

What are the features of limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis? (5)
A
CREST
• Calcinosis (hard, calcified nodules under the skin) • Raynaud’s phenomenon • Esophageal dysmotility (food gets stuck on swallowing, causing discomfort) • Sclerodactyly (tightening and thickening of skin over the fingers distal to MCP joints) • Telangiectasia (prominent dilated capillaries, particularly on the cheeks)

What is the management of scleroderma?
A
Immunosuppressants slow disease progression
Particularly cyclophosphamide
