· Autoimmune disease of connective tissue affecting the skin, intestine, kidneys and sometimes the lungs) causing the formation of scar tissue
· Caused by accumulation of excessive collagen

Due to excess collagen and scar tissue formation:
• Immobility & rigidity of skin
• Skin ulcers
• Stiff joints

- Lip rigidity can restrict opening of mouth
- Lack of dexterity due to skin rigidity
- Sensitivity to cold, dampness, stress and fatigue
