Scientists Flashcards
What is DNA?
The Genetic material of a cell carried by chromosomes in the form of genes.
What did Fredrick Miescher do?
Identifies a substance that will later be known as DNA .
What did Phoebus Levene do?
Publishes a paper on nucleic acids. His research helps scientist determine that DNA is made of four sugars.
What did Edwin Chargaff do?
Observes that the amount of Guan always equals the amount of cytosine and the amount of thymine his findings are known as Chargaffs rules
What did Roselyn Franklin and Marie Wilkins do?
They made images of DNA using x-rays, when an x-ray passes through the molecule, the Ray Bends, and creates a pattern that is captured on film
What did Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase do?
They performed experiments with viruses to confirm that DNA not proteins carries genetic information .
What did James Watson and Francis Crick do?
They used chargaffs rules and the x-ray images of DNA to conclude that DNA looks like a long twisted ladder they built a large scale model of DNA using simple materials from their laboratory
