Q

Describe the Spanish Inquisition and explain the cultural and social impact. Then explain what we might be able to learn from the Spanish inquisition.

A

The Spanish Inquisition was led by Ferdinand and Isabella I. It was decided that by converting all non-Christians (Jews and Muslims) to Christianity, Spain would become stronger. During the religious unification, the rulers discovered that some people would act Christian but stay loyal to their OG religion secretly. To prevent this, the Inquisition started. They were able to accuse anyone and the accused wouldn’t be able to defend themselves. The guilty would be persecuted, exiled, or even executed. This culturally and socially impacted Spain by making it less diverse. There was censorship on various goods and wealthy Muslims and Jews were economically impacted. There was a loss of artisans and merchants and eventually a loss of tax revenue. From the Spanish Inquisition, we can learn what happens when a government tries to control it’s people to act the same way.

Q

Who do you think was the most significant person in bringing change in the area of science? Why?

A

I think the most significant person in bringing change in the area of science was Andres Vesalius. He defied the rules at the time and researched the anatomy of humans through dissection. Through his findings, he was able to find modern anatomy and make advancements in medicine and how the human body works. Without his research/findings, modern scientists would not have been able to create treatments for the sick or vaccines for the plague, flu, and even the Corona virus. Andres Vesalius forever changed the medical area of science with his research on the human body that would help the future.

Q

Explain the major changes that occurred as a result of the scientific revolution? How do you think Europe changed as a result?

A

Before the revolution, people followed the Church - whatever they said goes. After, rediscovering the Greek and Roman classics, they realized they wanted to learn and have their own ideas. This led to the Reformation and Europe changed with the development of people’es ideas and inventions outside of the Church. All this progress allowed Europe to advance quicker than ever before.

Q

What ideas introduced during the Scientific Revolution do you feel are most significant in science today? Why?

A

The ideas introduced during the Scientific Revolution I feel are most significant today are the findings of medicine and the cell. Without these discoveries and advancements, modern day scientists wouldn’t have been able to create treatments for people who are really sick/dying. Furthermore, without those accomplishments, scientists four years ago wouldn’t have known how the human body operated and we wouldn’t have gotten a vaccine to help with a deadly virus.

Q

Describe how each scientist added to the ideas of those before them. How might they have influenced future scientists?

A

Galileo used Johannes Kepler’s studies of a mathematical formula to conclude the sun was in the center to create his own telescope in order to further test it. Francis Bacon introduced the scientific method - where God didn’t control everything - and Rene Descartes determines that truth must be added through reason instead of blind faith. Andres Vesalius’ discovery of modern anatomy helped William Harvey with his discovery on how blood circulates. And even Robert Hooke expanded their research to discover the cell. Each scientist contributed something to their area of research and without previous scientists, it would’ve taken them much longer, considering it’s decades of research. They also help future scientists because through their findings and modern day technology, scientists today can expand them and research even more in depth.
