Scientific Rev Flashcards
Describe the accepted view of the universe during Copernicus’ time.
- Problems with this view?
The earth is the center of the universe. Everything revolves around the Earth.
- the results of scientific experiments and observations came out strange, planets appeared to be moving backwards.
- ptolemaic systems ( earth centered around the universe )
What was Copernicus’ view of the universe?
The sun was the center of the universe(heliocentric)
- used empirical methods to observe the universe( mathematics & science )
Why was mathematics so important to have been combined with science at this time?
- for the first time data made sense when empirical data was introduced and used
Tycho Brahe’s contributions to Science?
Made very detailed empirical charts that predicted movements of the stars.
Johannes Kepler’s contributions to science
First to come to the conclusion that, the planets could not move in circular motion, but elliptical. HOWEVER HE DID NOT KNOW WHY.
Discoveries and Inventions of Galileo Galilei
Invented the telescope
First to be able to view things in space
Compared the theories of heliocentric and ptolemaic systems
Galileo’s significance of his Dialogue
Comparing heliocentric and ptolemaic views
Was sent to trial by the pope under suspicion of heresy and was put under papal imprisonment for the rest of his life.
Isaac Newtons work
Principia mathematica emphasized that math and science work together mutually .
and that due to views of Kepler, he came to the conclusion that it was because of GRAVITY
What was the scientific revolution and what caused it?
- see causes card
- scientific view on the universe and many other things changes among the people.
- Beginning of the end of the age where people rely solely on religion as their logic for the universe and being.
