Scientific Method Flashcards
What are the 9 steps in the scientific method?
Purpose, Research, Hypothesis, Procedure, Variables, Diagram, Observation, Data Summary, Conclusion
How do you identify the purpose?
Ask yourself:
- What question is the
experiment trying to
answer?
- Why, How, What?
What is the key of your purpose?
Must be measurable or observable
How do you do research?
Ask yourself:
- What do you already know?
- What information
do you have before
you do the
experiment?
What are the two questions to ask when creating a hypothesis?
- What do you predict will happen?
- Why might this
happen?
How do you write a hypothesis?
“If _(I do this)____,
then (this will happen)”
Hypothesis’ should…
include only one
variable that you change
When creating a procedure you need to ask these 3 questions
- What materials will you use to conduct the
experiment? - What step-by-step process will you use to conduct the experiment?
- What are your Variables?
What are the three Variables?
Dependent, Independent, Control
Before you make a diagram ask yourself this question..
What does your
experiment roughly look
like?
After you make your diagram you should ask…
Have you used all
necessary labels so it is
clear?
How do you observe what is happeing?
Use your five senses (touch, see, hear, smell, taste)
What are the two types of data that can be observed?
Qualitative and Quantitative
What is Qualitative Data?
-can be observed
-descriptive
(colour, texture, smells, tastes,
appearance)
What is Quantitative Data?
-can be measurable
-numerical
(Length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time,
temperature, humidity, sound levels, cost, age)
