scientific method Flashcards
reliable
An experiment is to be classified as reliable if it has been completed a total of three times
accuracy
A measurement result is accurate if it is close to its ‘true value ‘ of the quantity being measured. For example if a substance has mass of 2.7 grams but the value of the mass is 3.3 grams then the measurement is in accurate since it is not close to its true value.
measurment error
the difference between the measured value and the true value is known as a measurment error.
precise:
how closely to or more measurment values agree with eachother. eg. if a subtance was weighed 5 times and there was a mass of 2,70 obtained each times the results are classified as precise.
repeatable:
refers to the closeness of agreement between results obtained with the same method, same materials and same conditions.
reproducibility:
Is the closeness of agreement between results obtained with the same method and test material but a different lab and observer.
validity
Data is said to be valid if the measurements are only effected by the IV and all other variable are controlled.
hypothesis:
an educated guess or prediction for the expected outcome for the experimnet
IV
Stands alone and is not effected by the DV. Eg doctors per 10,000 x axis
DV
is effected by the IV eg life expectancy
control variable
any variable that must be held constant in a research study. eg. amount of sunlight on plant growth - C.V would be the same no rain/ or same amount of rain as water effects growth
double blind
