cell organells Flashcards
Nucleus
The control center of the cell that houses the genetic material (DNA) and regulates cell activities
Mitochondria:
Responsible for producing energy (ATP) through cellular respiration
endoplasmic recticulum
that serves many roles in the cell including calcium storage, protein synthesis and lipid metabolism
Giolgi apparatus
modifies, packages and transports proteins and lipids to their final destination inside or outside the cell
ribosomes:
cellular structures that synthesize proteins by reading the genetic code in MRNA.
lysosomes:
lysosomes: contain enzymes to break down cellular waste and foreign substances in a process called autophagy
vacuole
a storage organelle that can hold water, nutrients or waste materials
chloroplasts
found in plant cells, they carry out photosynthesis, convert light energy into chemical energy
cytoplasm
a network of protein filaments that provides structural support and helps cell movement and diffusion
cell membrane
the boundary of a cell, controlling the passive of substances in and out of the cell
plant vs animal cells
Plant cells have a cell wall in addition to a cell membrane, whereas animal cells only have a cell membrane
prokaryotic vs eukaryotic
pro: simple cells with a cell membrane, ribosomes and DNA. eg. bacteria
euk: complex cells with a nucleus and cell bound organelles. eg fungi
nuclear membrane
holds the contents of the cell together
