Scientific Method Flashcards
What are the six steps of the scientific method?
observation, question, hypothesis, prediction, experiment, results/conclusion
What is the scientific method?
A logical, systematic approach to the solution of a scientific problem
What is the scientific method also referred to as?
Hypothetico-deductive method
What type of approach is inductive reasoning?
A bottom-up approach
Deductive Reasoning
Starts with a general idea and determines if it applies to a specific observation
Inductive Reasoning
Uses many individual observations to make a generalization.
Reductionism
Reduces complex systems to simpler, more manageable components
What type of approach is deductive reasoning?
A bottom-down approach
What is an observation?
the act of viewing the world around us
What is a Scientific Inquiry
a deliberate, systematic, careful and unbiased way of learning about the natural world
What is the test group?
The experimental group that is exposed to the variable in an experiment
What is the control group?
The group that is not exposed to the variable in an experiment
What is a theory?
A theory is a general explanation of natural phenomena supported by many experiments and observations
What are the differences among a guess, hypothesis and theory
A guess does not make predictions as to why an observation. A hypothesis is an explanation of that observation (or event) that predicts the results of experiments. A theory is a broad explanation that accounts for the number of related hypotheses that have been repeatedly supported through vigorous testing
