Chapter 44 Population Ecology Flashcards
What is a population?
A population includes all the individual of a given species that live and reproduce in a particular time and place
What are the three key features of a population?
size, range, and density
What is Ecology?
the study of the relationships of organisms to one another and the environment
Population size?
the number of individuals of all ages alive at a particular time in a particular place
Population density?
A populations size divided by its range
Geographic range?
the area over which that population is spread
What is the difference between a population and a species?
A species is a group of organisms that can reproduce among themselves and make fertile offspring. A population is a group of individuals of the same species that inhabits a certain area.
What are the four factors that affect population size?
birth, death, immigration, and emigration
What is the per capita growth rate?
the change in population size in a given period of time divided by the size of the population
Continuous growth
a type of population growth in which the population increases or decreases continuously
Exponential Growth
The pattern of population increase that results when “r” (the capital growth rate) is constant through time
what is the intrinsic rate of increase?
the maximum rate of growth when no environmental factors limit population increase
what is the definition of Intraspecific?
competition between individuals of the same species (within species)
What is the definition of Interspecific?
competition between individuals of different species (between species)
What is the definition of Competition?
between individuals of different species
