Scientific Investigation Flashcards
Problem
(Question- in scientific method) A matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome.
Observation
The action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information.
Data
Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.
Procedures
An established or official way of doing something.
Inference
A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Hypothesis
A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Controlled Variables
“The control variable (or scientific constant) in scientific experimentation is the experimental element which is constant and unchanged throughout the course of the investigation.”
Independent Variable
A variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another.
Dependent Variable
A variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another.
Constant
Occurring continuously over a period of time.
Qualitative Data
“Qualitative data is typically descriptive data and as such is harder to analyze than quantitative data. Qualitative research is useful for studies at the individual level, and to find out, in depth, the ways in which people think or feel (e.g. case studies).”
Quantitative Data
“Quantitative data is data expressing a certain quantity, amount or range. Usually, there are measurement units associated with the data, e.g. metres, in the case of the height of a person. It makes sense to set boundary limits to such data, and it is also meaningful to apply arithmetic operations to the data.”
