Scientific Investigation Flashcards
To determine what problem you want to address you must do these things
Make Observations and Do Research
An Educated guess based on research and observations. Usually written in the “If” Then” format
Hypothesis
When you test the hypothesis, change only one variable, collect data and make observations what are you doing?
Conducting an experiment
We use data tables and graphs to do what?
Interpret and Analyze data
When we review our data and think about the next version of our experiment, what are we doing?
Drawing a conclusion
When we have completed our experiment and analysis what is the next critical step in the scientific method?
Communicating our findings and thoughts with others. Getting a peer to review your work makes the whole process better.
These are the “factors” we can change in an experiment
Variables
What is the name of the variable that the scientist “I” change to see what will happen ?
Independent variable
What is the name of the variable that changes as a result of changing the independent variable
Dependent variable (It depends on the independent variable)
What is the term for the baseline measurement that you compare your data to?
The control
Variable that are purposely kept the same in an experiment are?
Constants
A structured way to test a hypothesis
Experiment
Is it true that the more repeated trials you conduct the better the experimental results?
Yes - Repeated Trials are great!!
What is the most important “instrument” in the history of Life Science?
The microscope
How do you determine the magnification power of a compound microscope?
Multiply the eyepiece power by the objective lens power. (Ex: 10 x 40 = 400)
What is the proper way to move a microscope?
Hold the “arm” with one hand and place the palm of the other hand under the base.
What is the proper way to store a microscope?
Return the stage to the lowest level, return the objective lens to the least powerful (shortest) lens, turn off the light, carefully unplug and wrap the cord and finally put the plastic dust cover back on.
What adjustment know do you use first to focus the specimen?
Coarse Adjustment knob
Who were 2 of the first microscope inventors?
Robert Hooke and Anton von Leeuwenhoek
