Scientific Design Flashcards
What is an independent variable?
An independent variable is the variable that is controlled during an experiment. (Ex: Age, time, or type of treatment administered)
What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable is the variable that is being measured. (Ex: blood glucose level, moods evaluated in a survey, blood oxygen concentration)
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a prediction about the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
- Uses words such as: hypothesize, predict, theorize
What is a purpose in regards to a study?
A purpose is a statement about the independent variable and dependent variable, but without a prediction about the outcome.
- Uses words such as: investigate, clarify, examine
What is a study design?
A study design is a series of steps or a process used to control variables and generate data.
- Examples of study design types are: randomized, case-controlled, cohort, cross-sectional, longitudinal
