Science vocabulary Flashcards
Convection Currents
Currents in the mantle that cause tectonic plates to move; the currents go up and then down because the lighter part, the hot part goes up, and the opposite (because of gravity).
mid-ocean ridge
A crack where the seafloor spreading begins. This crack almost splits the crust of the Earth in half (besides other tectonic plates).
Subduction
When an ocean tectonic plate collides with a less dense continental plate and goes under it while breaking down in the hot mantle and sometimes bringing Magna up and and out volcanos.
seafloor spreading
When two plates come apart in the seafloor, and Magna from the mantle pushes out, creating new seafloor on each side of the mid-oceanic ridge.
Divergent plate boundary
When two plates pull apart from convection currents, and the Magna oozes out, creating new land in that opening.
