A scale that ranks earthquakes according to the energy released.
Moment Magnitude Scale
A scale that rates the damage experienced by buildings, the ground, and people during an earthquake.
Modified Mercalli Scale
A erupting vent through which molten rock and other materials reach earth’s surface.

A volcano that is erupting or has erupted recently.
Active volcano.
A volcano that is not erupting now, but may erupt in the future.
Dormant volcano.
A volcano that no longer erupts and is in the system of eroding.
extinct volcano
Solid remains of magma that filled the conduit of an extinct volcano.
volcanic neck
A flat and wide volcano that has as low-silica magma and lava with low or high levels of dissolved gas.
