Science Chapter 13 Flashcards
Vocabulary
A naturally formed solid made of one or more materials.
Rock
A solid, naturally occurring, crystalline object with defined chemical composition.
MIneral
A surface along which a mineral cleanly splits.
Cleavage PLane
A scale to identify minerals based on their Hardness or resistance to being scratched.
Moh’s Hardness Scale
The formation and recycling of rocks by geologic processes.
Rocks Cycle
A rock formed from the cooling and crystalizing of magma or lava.
igneous rock
A rock made of sediments that are cemented together by low pressure and chemical.
Sedimentary Rock
A small rock particles minerals, and bits of once living things.
Sediment.
A rock formed from another rock because of heat and high pressure.
Metamorphic
The process by which crystals form and grow in size.
Crystallization
A dark colored igneous rock with fine crystals. Formed from lava that is not silica rich. This is formed from the oceanic crust.
Basalt
An igneous rock with large visible crystals . Formed from silica-rich magma. This rock forms the continental crust.
Granite
An igneous rock that cools outside the earth’s crust
Extrusive rock
An igneous rock that cools inside earth’s crust
Intrusive rock
The process by which sediment is pressed together as more and more layers or beds of sediment on top of each other.
Compaction
